It is enough to see what has happened in politics after Nano's departure to understand that the only political act in these two decades is his resignation and departure from the leadership of the Socialist Party.
If there is one thing that will never be denied to Fatos Nano, it is his great courage and strength to flee, to leave, to not hold the party hostage and not cling to it with his nails to protect himself from his own fears. He did not do this only when he left in 2005, he had done it several times before.
Although after losing the 2005 elections, he could have remained at the helm of the Socialist Party, could have 'reorganized' the 'base' and could have invented rescue congresses, produced a rhetoric of return and resurgence, he chose to mind his own business and let the Socialist Party walk without his shadow.
It is enough to see what has happened in politics after Nano's departure to understand that the only political act in these two decades is his resignation and departure from the leadership of the Socialist Party.
Undoubtedly, Nano had his own great vices, he certainly wanted to return several times as President of the Republic, but, although he had the opportunity to cause chaos, to disrupt work, to engage in bargaining and negotiations, he did none of these, as revenge and anger did not prevail in him, but gentleness and liberality.
During his political engagement, there were serious accusations, but the fact that after his departure from politics no one dealt with them anymore shows exactly the opposite of what they accused him of, and even the biggest accusers were forced to retract them and say that they had been only for political consumption and not at all true.
In conditions of extreme polarization, where no one agrees to step down, Nano leaves today honored, leaving us with a great lesson in politics: the dignity of facing the outcome and not being afraid of oneself in relation to what awaits one without political immunity.
Albania lacks the culture of leaving and withdrawing from politics, partly due to great sins and fear of revenge, so even if Nano is forgotten for the rest, he will be remembered precisely for the culture of leaving and accepting reality, not seeing leaving as the end of everything, but as a way to reflect and save face.
