The KTA report for 2025 indicates that in total, about 16 thousand hectares of forest and pasture land were burned, out of a total of 34 thousand hectares burned by fires.
The year 2025 resulted as one of the most problematic of the last decade, ranking second after 2017 and marking almost a doubling of the burned areas compared to the period 2021–2024.
The value of the damage is estimated to be catastrophic for the economy and the environment. The total value of the damage in the entire National Forest and Pasture Fund reached 7,186,335,000 lek.
During this season, 128,597.8 m³ of wood material was destroyed, of which only a small part of 25,634 m³ remained usable for exploitation. The fires had a wide geographical spread in 47 municipalities, but the southern regions of the country recorded the greatest damage.
According to reported data, the municipalities with the largest burned areas in hectares are:
Delvinë: 5,845 ha
Finiq: 1,828 ha
Tepelena: 1,512 ha
Konispol: 1,400 ha
Himara: 1,081 ha
Gramsh: 982 ha
Berat: 690 ha
The regions of Vlora and Gjirokastra lead the national ranking by a significant margin from other regions.
The main causes of this serious situation were the combination of human activity and extreme climatic conditions. Very high temperatures, prolonged drought and strong winds created the ideal terrain for the rapid spread of flames, especially in areas forested with pine trees, where the presence of needles and resin worsened the situation.
Human activity remains the determining factor through:
Burning of agricultural waste without taking the necessary safety measures.
Fires lit to open new pastures that got out of control.
Throwing lit cigarettes in nature and a general lack of civic awareness.
Accidental technical causes, such as defects in electrical lines passing through forests or sparks from motor vehicles in dry terrain.
Intentional arsons, often linked to property conflicts, illegal land clearing or speculation for urban development.
Despite identifying these factors, institutions report that the vast majority, namely 150 cases of fires, continue to remain with unknown causes, while 20 cases have been classified as unintentional human and only 3 as intentional./ Tch
