Berlin police announced that the main suspect in the attack during the Pride Parade celebrations was shot dead during a special police operation in a garden complex in the Spandau district, in the western part of the German capital.
According to a statement from Berlin Police, officers used firearms against the suspect, who died at the scene. The operation was carried out after an intensive investigation that began immediately after the attack on Saturday evening in Tiergarten park, near the Brandenburg Gate.
The attack left one person dead and at least 16 injured, some of them in critical condition. A white vehicle drove into a crowd of participants, hitting several people before crashing. The incident forced organizers to cancel the major Pride celebrations, one of the most important LGBTQ+ events in Europe.
German media sources report that the suspect was a person known to the police, with links to Islamist circles in Berlin. He was identified soon after the incident, but managed to flee the scene. Police carried out an extensive search operation, involving helicopters and special units, which culminated in the fatal confrontation in Spandau.
Officials said investigations are ongoing to clarify all details, including the possible motive for the attack.
