United States President Donald Trump has decided not to escalate strikes against Iran for the time being due to limited reserves of Patriot anti-missile interceptors and other air defense munitions in the Middle East, The New York Times reported.
According to the newspaper, the decision was made during a meeting held on Friday between Trump and his top advisers. Citing two sources familiar with the discussions, The New York Times writes that General Dan Caine, chairman of the US Army Joint Chiefs of Staff, warned that continued fighting could dangerously deplete the reserves of interceptor missiles available to US Central Command (CENTCOM), which covers operations in the Middle East.
The report notes that Trump and his aides are also concerned about the risk of a wider war in the region, the vulnerability of US allies in the Persian Gulf to Iranian attacks, as well as the impact that an expanded conflict could have on the global economy, energy markets and migration flows.
According to The New York Times, the US president is considering next steps in relation to Iran, including the issue of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, while oil and fuel prices have increased following the resumption of hostilities over the past two weeks.
The newspaper adds that diplomatic efforts have stalled and that the latest wave of massive American attacks does not appear to have had a deterrent effect on Iran from a military point of view.
