Mount Olympus in Greece and the Allied landing beaches in Northern France during World War II were added to the World Heritage List.
The decision was unanimously adopted at the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea, making Olympus one of the few sites worldwide designated as a mixed World Heritage property, for both its cultural and natural significance.
Revered in Greek mythology as the home of the 12 Olympian gods, Mount Olympus is also one of the richest areas of biodiversity in Europe. The mountain is home to nearly 2,000 plant taxa, including dozens of species found nowhere else on Earth, as well as rare wildlife.
The designation for France includes the five landing beaches in Normandy, where more than 150,000 Allied troops landed on June 6, 1944.
All of these were essential to the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi occupation during World War II. The International Council on Monuments and Sites, which evaluates nominations for the heritage committee, said the sites preserve a wealth of historical remains, from German fortifications and bomb-ravaged landscapes to Allied port structures and sunken ships, marking an “event widely perceived as one that made possible the return of freedom and heralded a lasting peace on the European continent.”
