The price increases by 25%, the government remains silent while the Competition Authority launches an investigation into agreements between producers...
Bread producers and traders in Korça have increased the price to 150 lekë, an increase of about 25%. Citizens have reacted by turning to the Competition Authority, which has launched an investigation into suspicions of cartel agreements between producers and traders. Meanwhile, the government and the regional deputies have not reacted publicly to the increase in the price of the basic consumer product. The investigation is expected to last up to a year, while the new price continues to be applied in the market.
Bread producers and traders in Korça have announced that the price of bread will be 150 lek, up from 120 lek, a value equivalent to a 25% price increase, burdening consumers in the area.
Prime Minister Edi Rama, Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi, MP for Korça, and the 9 SP-PD MPs in this region are remaining silent, as if they have not heard that the price of bread has increased.
Private individuals have made a unified scheme of increasing prices, abusing situations of war or crisis far from Albania, while the products of the basket are at higher prices than in the region and the EU.
But citizens have reacted to the increase in the price of bread in Korça, who have addressed complaints and requests to the Competition Authority to stop the abuse of the 150 lek price.
According to the document being published by "Pamfleti", the Competition Authority has announced that on March 5, 2026, it began an investigation into the network of mass bread producers and traders in Korça.
The Competition Authority's announcement states:
"In accordance with the law 'On the protection of competition', field inspections are being carried out with the aim of identifying price abuses being committed by bread producers and sellers in Korça."
According to the Competition Authority, this investigation is being conducted to protect consumers and prevent market abuse through agreements that predetermine the increase in the unified price as a cartel for the price of bread, a product of mass daily consumption.
Increasing the price of bread in Korça without any real argument of financial cost is a violation of the law and is punishable by a fine of up to 10% of the turnover of the previous fiscal year that bread producers and traders have achieved.
Even in the case of the 25% increase in the price of bread in Korça, the government's inaction and the silence of the SP-PD deputies in that region are absurd, while the investigation by the Competition Authority is independent of the government.
The question that arises is whether the head of the Competition Authority, Denar Biba, will enforce the law against the increase in the price of bread as a cartel agreement between producers and traders.
Because previous cases have shown that, under the guise of investigations into price cartels, the Competition Authority has allowed the prices of flour, pesticides, oil, detergents, medicines and other basket products to increase.
Another absurdity is the fact that the investigation into the increase in the price of bread in Korça will last a year, while after that it will take another six months to analyze the abuses and make a decision.
Meanwhile, during this time, the price of bread will continue to rise, while in parallel with the investigation, the Competition Authority must immediately block this price increase./ Pamphlet
