The Albanian paradox. Poverty increases, bank savings increase

At the end of September, there were over 1.4 trillion lek deposits in banks. Data from the Bank of Albania show that compared to August, the value of money deposited by citizens and businesses expanded by 12.5 billion lek.

Leons Hasani, an economic expert, told A2 CNN: "We estimate that there is an increase in the income of Albanian families and individuals. But answering your question about how much Albanians save and how much they are able to save, this is related to both their financial culture and their income level."

And at a time when savings in banks are increasing, a significant portion of the population complains that they don't even have money to get through the month.

"I work and eat, I have no savings. We don't have the means to save. And today and tomorrow, we have nothing to do. We are in this country. We can't go outside the framework. No, no. Where is there. We don't have a budget to save. We can't," say the citizens.

The paradox is explained by data from the Deposit Insurance Agency. More than half of the money saved belongs to just 5 percent of citizens.

"Considering that 40 percent of individuals' income goes to basic consumption.. This shows on the other hand that we will have a low level of savings. This consequently has effects on the economy by slowing down many economic processes. In some regions there is an increase, in some regions there is a decrease. For example, in the Northern regions we have a decrease in the income level of Albanian families, while in the regions of Durrës, Tirana and Korça we have an increase in income indexed to the inflation rate", adds Hasani.

Data from the Central Bank show that due to the depreciation of the euro, deposits in lek are expanding in banks. Savings in the national currency at the end of September exceeded 681 billion lek./ A2CNN
