Europe, a midsummer night's dream

Europe, a midsummer night's dream
Edi Rama /

It promises the EU within a decade, but Albania sinks into crime, corruption and captured institutions...

Edi Rama's optimism for Albania's accession to the European Union by 2030 has no real support on the ground. This approach of the head of government, often articulated in triumphalist language, does not reflect the structural problems that hold back the integration process. Albania continues to have serious deficits in the rule of law, media freedom, separation of powers and the capacity of public institutions. Recent reports by the European Commission highlight a lack of real progress in the fight against corruption and money laundering. Criminal forfeiture and confiscation of assets from criminal activity remain symbolic.

Albania is today one of the countries with the highest level of organized crime in the Balkans. The drug market, the circulation of black money and the capture of the economy by criminal and clientelistic structures is a well-known phenomenon and documented by European agencies and monitoring organizations. Despite the official rhetoric, the justice system is still under political pressure and is not independent. Its reform is progressing at a slow pace and the results do not justify either the funds or the support provided by European partners.

Optimism cannot be based on symbolic dates and public promises without a concrete plan of action. The EU accession process is not a propaganda contest, but a test of a country's real capacity to respect and implement strong democratic standards. Albania cannot join the EU without fundamentally changing its political model, guaranteeing the independence of the judiciary, fighting high-level corruption, and building a transparent economy.

Today, none of these conditions are reasonable. None of these challenges can be avoided with optimistic political communication. Citizens do not need rhetoric, but rather sensitive reforms that really change public life and trust in institutions. Until then, any talk about Albania's imminent accession to the EU remains internal political speculation./ Pamphlet
