Zelensky: Russia is collapsing from within, Putin has lost control

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declares that the military situation is more promising for Ukraine than in the past two years, while accusing the Kremlin of continuous losses on the front and in the international arena.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian that Russia is gradually losing the initiative in the war that began with the complete invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

During the meeting in London, Zelensky said that the military situation is the most favorable for Kiev in two and a half years. According to him, although it cannot be said that Russia is losing the war, it can be concluded that it is losing the initiative day by day.

The Ukrainian president noted that in recent weeks Ukraine has struck strategic Russian targets with long-range drones, including energy infrastructure in St. Petersburg and Crimea. He said these attacks have damaged Russian logistics lines and caused significant fuel shortages on the peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014.

On the eastern front, Zelensky assessed that the advance of Russian forces has slowed significantly. According to him, Russia loses over 30,000 soldiers every month, between killed and seriously wounded. He added that Ukraine has also suffered losses, but to a lesser extent.

However, the Ukrainian president warned that Russia has intensified air strikes on Ukrainian cities. He cited a recent attack with dozens of missiles and hundreds of drones that caused civilian casualties in Kiev and Dnipro, including a three-year-old child.

Last week, Zelensky sent an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, proposing a direct meeting to discuss ending the conflict. Putin rejected the offer during the St. Petersburg Economic Forum, reiterating Russia's territorial claims to Donbas and other regions in southern Ukraine.

Zelensky stated that the reasons why Putin makes false statements are of little importance, arguing that the Russian president has been using false narratives since the beginning of the war to justify aggression and maintain domestic support.

On the diplomatic front, he assessed that Russia has suffered several political losses. According to him, Moscow-backed candidates have failed in elections in countries such as Hungary, Moldova and Armenia, while Russian influence is weakening in other regions as well.

Speaking about relations with the United States, Zelensky thanked the American people for their support for Ukraine, but acknowledged that the attention of President Donald Trump's administration has shifted to the Middle East. He expressed regret that Ukraine has not received the same level of military support as some of Washington's allies in the region.

The Ukrainian president stressed that his country has become a major power in the production and use of military drones. However, according to him, the most necessary system remains the American Patriot, which is capable of neutralizing Russian ballistic missiles.

During recent meetings with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron, Zelensky reiterated the demand that European partners assist in Ukraine's air defense and in the modernization of its armed forces.

He also suggested that European countries develop an alternative to the Patriot system, while Ukraine is ready to share its experience in drone warfare.

Regarding Crimea, Zelensky said that Ukrainian forces are striking logistical infrastructure and military targets on the peninsula, considering its return to Ukrainian control as a long-term goal.

The Ukrainian president argued that the drone strikes on Russian territory are intended to make Russian citizens understand the real consequences of the war. According to him, victory will come when Russian society sees the conflict as a tragedy that directly affects it.

Zelensky also revealed that he had met with Russian businessman Roman Abramovich in Kiev in May. According to him, there are divided opinions within Putin's inner circle about continuing the war, while part of the Russian economic elite is concerned about the state of the country's economy.

At the end of the interview, Zelensky also spoke about relations with King Charles III of Great Britain. He said that Ukrainians have great respect for the British monarch and expressed the desire for him to visit Kyiv in the future, if security conditions allow.
