Trump increases pressure, holds emergency Oval Office meeting on Venezuela

Donald Trump and his team will hold an emergency Oval Office meeting on Venezuela on Monday to discuss "next steps" in their approach to the country and its leader, Nicolas Maduro, sources report.

The US president has summoned senior national security officials, including Secretary of War (former Defense) Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Kaine, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Stephen Miller are also expected to attend the meeting scheduled for 5 p.m. (Washington local time, midnight Greek time), according to CNN.

Donald Trump increased the pressure on Venezuela's socialist leader, Nicolas Maduro, over the weekend, giving him an ultimatum to resign.

"I wouldn't say it went well or badly, it was a phone call," the president told reporters on Sunday.

Neither the US nor the Venezuelan government have provided details about the call, which reportedly took place on November 21.

However, sources told the Miami Herald that Trump openly told Maduro that his time was up after a four-month campaign by the US military against "narco-terrorists" in the Caribbean.

"You can save yourself and the people closest to you, but you must leave the country now," Trump told Maduro, offering safe passage for his wife and son "only if he agrees to resign immediately."
