The statement by the US envoy to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, that he "hopes for a German to take command of allied forces in Europe", has shocked NATO member states and sparked debate over the future role of the US in the alliance.

According to Newsweek, his comments at the Berlin Security Conference have been read as a signal of Washington's gradual withdrawal from traditional dominance in NATO's military structures.

Since the alliance's inception, the post of SACEUR, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, has always been held by Americans, from Dwight Eisenhower in 1950 to the current General Alexus Grynkewich. The idea that a German could replace an American was seen as a historic change.

Whitaker's suggestion comes after repeated statements by Donald Trump, who has for years criticized European countries for lacking investment in defense. However, Whitaker tried to reassure allies by saying that the US remains committed to NATO, while praising the increase in the defense budget by the German government of Friedrich Merz, which has promised "the strongest conventional army in Europe."

Security experts see this as part of a strategic repositioning of the United States. Whitaker's comments clearly indicate that the US sees Asia as its top geopolitical priority, and therefore intends to shift some of its capabilities from Europe.

Experts warn that if the US were to give up the post of SACEUR, it would mean a loss of American influence over alliance operations and would be read in Europe as a clear sign of a break from Washington's traditional commitment.

German officials were surprised by Whitaker's idea. The German representative to NATO and the EU, General Wolfgang Wien, said that Berlin could take on more responsibility, but the SACEUR post has historically been seen as an American duty.

Meanwhile, Germany is continuing to modernize its military. The Bundestag is expected to vote next month on a law requiring every 18-year-old to fill out a form to declare their readiness for military service. The Bundeswehr is expected to grow to 460,000 active and reserve personnel by the middle of the next decade, in response to the increased Russian threat from 2022.

Newsweek writes that, although no immediate move is expected, Whitaker's suggestion gives Berlin a "vote of confidence" and opens a new phase where Europe could move closer to assuming greater security responsibilities, always with the strategic support of the United States.
