The heavy rains that hit Gaza this week have significantly worsened living conditions for hundreds of thousands of people sheltering in tents and temporary housing, often completely exposed to winter storms.

In northern and central parts of Gaza, floods have engulfed refugee camps, with water overflowing tents, drowning the few belongings that families managed to keep after repeated displacements.

A journalist in the Jabalya refugee camp describes his reality this way: "My tent was flooded and with it everything I managed to create after the displacement sank. This is the third winter in a row, we are drowning in cold, water, oblivion and misery."

Humanitarian agencies have been warning for months that the winter in Gaza will be catastrophic due to the infrastructure that has been destroyed over the past two years. Especially after the recent storm, dozens of emergency shelters have been damaged throughout the enclave.

The situation in hospitals, some of the few medical centers still functioning, has worsened. A video posted on social media showed water seeping into a hospital operating room, jeopardizing patient safety and disease control.

In southern Gaza, in tent camps, residents report rising water levels, a lack of blankets, clothes and heating equipment. Many families say they are struggling to survive, children are exposed to the cold and water is everywhere.

According to assessments by humanitarian organizations, aid, winter tents, thermal blankets, children's clothes, and energy for heating are urgently needed.

As the rains continue, residents fear that flooding could worsen, especially in low-lying camps, where drainage channels have been destroyed and debris from collapsed buildings is blocking the flow of water.

"Gaza is drowning in blood and rainwater ," says one resident on social media.

"The tents are flooded, the atmosphere is gloomy and the cold is killing the children. The relevant authorities must act immediately to save what is left of the city and to provide for the basic needs of the affected people," the resident calls.
