Over 1,000 dead in floods in Asia, military forces on alert

Major natural disasters have hit several Asian countries, leaving more than 1,000 dead and hundreds missing.

Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia are facing the worst floods in recent years, as authorities and the military have mobilized for rescue operations and emergency relief.

In Indonesia, more than 500 people have died and the same number are missing, President Prabowo Subianto visited the worst-hit areas in North Sumatra.

He stated that the priority is the immediate delivery of necessary aid, while planes, helicopters and three warships have been deployed to the field to transport supplies.

Subianto calls for the declaration of a national emergency, in one of the worst disasters in the country since the 2018 tsunami in Sulawesi.

Sri Lanka has also been hit hard, with at least 334 deaths, according to the state disaster management agency. President Anuradha Kumara Dissanayake declared a state of emergency and called the situation "the biggest and most difficult disaster in the country's history since the 2004 tsunami."

Military helicopters were used to evacuate stranded residents, but one of them crashed on Sunday evening north of Colombo.

In southern Thailand, 176 people have died in one of the deadliest floods in a decade. While the government is sending aid, public anger over the handling of the crisis has grown, leading to the dismissal of two local officials.

In Malaysia, floods in the state of Perlis caused two deaths, while large areas of land were left underwater after torrential rains.
