Kyrylo Budanov, the “ice man” who heads Ukraine’s military intelligence service, is the leading name to take over the Ukrainian presidential office. A senior government aide describes him as the number one negotiator with the Americans: hard arguments, facts, not emotions!
As other Ukrainian officials fled to the United States, Budanov sat down with Zelensky, presented him with the political and security situation, and together they identified several key points for the negotiation process. No one knows yet whether he will accept Zelensky's proposal. In 2023, when he was proposed as defense minister after Oleksii Reznikov resigned, he declined without comment.
His life is like those in novels...
Budanov has survived more than 10 assassination attempts. In 2019, someone planted a bomb in his car, the explosion occurred prematurely and he escaped. His wife was also attacked, in late 2023, she was poisoned along with several other officials, according to intelligence services in a deliberate act.
Budanov has been awarded the title of “Hero of Ukraine” by Zelensky for “bravery and heroism” in the service of the country. However, relations between them are complicated, and he is seen as a potential rival, especially now that it is reported that he could take a key position near the presidency.
He has been an officer since 2007 and has served in military intelligence services, has participated in combat since 2014, has conducted covert operations in occupied areas, and has been wounded several times.
According to sources, even today Budanov is not an official who always stays in the office; he often goes with military troops to the field, so as not to lose touch with the reality of war.
Amidst internal intrigues, numerous attempts at elimination, military heroism, and political conflicts, Budanov is the figure that many in Kiev (and beyond) see as the decisive man.
He himself, for more than a decade, has survived attempts to eradicate him.
