US President Donald Trump has made one of the strongest statements in recent days regarding developments in the Middle East, directly threatening Hamas that it will disarm "swiftly and perhaps by force" if it does not voluntarily surrender its weapons.
During a press conference at the White House, following a meeting with Argentine President Javier Miel, Trump declared: "If they don't disarm, we will disarm them. And it will happen quickly - perhaps even violently."
He said he had received assurances from Hamas representatives that the group would hand over its weapons, adding that the talks had been held "through my people at the highest levels."
But more than the usual rhetoric, another statement has attracted great attention: Trump said that Hamas has "eliminated two very bad gangs" in Gaza and "killed some of them," adding that "that didn't bother me at all."
