German intelligence has warned of a Russian attack on NATO before 2029.
Martin Jaeger, head of the BND spy service, told lawmakers that Russia is determined to expand its "sphere of influence further west towards Europe."
He said that Russia poses a direct threat and that the current "icy peace" with the EU could erupt at any moment into "hot confrontation", Euroactiv writes.
" We cannot sit back and assume that a possible Russian attack will not happen until 2029, at best. We are already under attack. Russia's actions are designed to undermine NATO and divide societies, " said the new BND chief, Martin Jäger, at a public hearing of the Bundestag's Parliamentary Control Panel.
He cited Russia's methods as election manipulation, disinformation, espionage, and sabotage.
" These isolated incidents, which occur frequently, represent a new level of confrontation ." Europe, he said, is being pushed towards self-destruction, paralyzed by fear and inertia.
Along with Jaeger were the leaders of Germany's domestic and military intelligence services.
Although they mentioned other threats, such as political and religious extremism, it was Russia that dominated their statements.
Jaeger said Germany is Russia's number one target in Europe, given that it is the EU's largest economy and plays a leading role in supporting Ukraine.
The warnings come after a series of incidents in the European Union, including the incursion of Russian drones into Poland and the violation of Estonian airspace by Russian fighter jets.
