The transcripts, known as the “Mindich Tapes,” have sparked a huge debate in Ukraine, as they allegedly reveal corruption and political influence within President Volodymyr Zelensky’s inner circle. At the center of the scandal is Timur Mindich, an associate of Zelensky, who is being investigated by Ukrainian anti-corruption agencies and is currently in Israel to avoid extradition.
The recordings, intercepted by NABU and SAPO in 2025, relate to an alleged $100 million extortion scheme at the state-owned company Energoatom. According to the transcripts, senior Ukrainian officials discussed political influence, diplomatic appointments and financial interests.

Leaked transcripts have revealed how senior Ukrainian officials allegedly traded influence for billions of dollars and discussed plans to defect to the US.
The most popular form of political content in Ukraine recently seems to be the public reading of transcripts filled with insults against Vladimir Zelensky's closest political allies, who speak of corruption and abuses, in Russian. The so-called "Mindich Tapes" could have serious political consequences, as they allegedly implicate Zelensky himself in corruption.
At the center of the scandal is an investigation by Western-backed Ukrainian anti-corruption agencies into Timur Mindich, a business associate of Zelensky, known in Kiev as his political “treasurer” or “portfolio.” Mindich is currently on the run and is fighting an extradition request from Israel.
Investigators from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) wiretapped Mindich's luxury apartment in Kiev, reportedly between April and July 2025. This came as Zelensky was trying to seize control of the agency, which sparked massive protests and criticism from Western allies.

Mindich and Umerov discussed the advantages and disadvantages of different candidates to represent Kiev's interests in Washington, but agreed that Grinchuk had the greatest chance of having regular access to "the old man," a term they said referred to Trump.
What were Mindich and Umerov aiming for? According to the transcripts, Mindich's group sought political and financial influence. One of the objectives was control over the nationalized bank Sense Bank, considered an important source of financing for businesses.
Umerov, who at the time of the recordings was facing the possibility of being removed from office, was reportedly seeking a diplomatic post that would provide him with freedom of travel abroad and privileges similar to those of Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff.
