It seemed like a quick fling. Now it seems like true love. Relations between Donald Trump and Alexander Lukashenko, the sane autocrat of Belarus, are now improving after being abruptly cut short, with embassy closures and US sanctions, in 2022, the year of the presidential election won with an iron fist by Lukashenko, who has been in power in Belarus since 1994.
The latest move came yesterday, when US authorities removed Belavia Airlines from the sanctions list. It is the state-owned carrier of Belarus, the country currently closest and most sympathetic to Vladimir Putin's Russia.
However, before that, there had been other contacts, including a mission to Minsk by Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, which led to the release of several dozen political prisoners by Lukashenko, including Sergei Tikhanovsky, the most famous opposition figure, who had been imprisoned in 2022, two days after announcing his candidacy in that election.
The evidence is now overwhelming: the two old foxes are up to something. But what? Some good business deal? Using Belarus as a mailbox for letters between Moscow and Washington? Or is there something else? Something that deeply irritates Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic states? /Inside Over
