The United States and Russia are close to reaching an agreement to extend the START nuclear treaty, which regulates the limitation of the nuclear arsenals of the world's two largest powers.
According to three sources cited by the American media outlet Axios, the two countries are "moving closer to an agreement" to extend the treaty, which is in danger of expiring.
Two of these sources have revealed that a draft plan, provisionally agreed upon by officials from both sides, still needs to be approved by US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.
According to the same sources, the US and Russia have agreed to extend the existing treaty for a six-month period, in order to have additional time to finalize negotiations for a longer-term agreement.
The extension of START would constitute a significant development in the field of global security, as this treaty is one of the main international instruments for controlling nuclear arms and preventing a new arms race.
