A serious espionage scandal has erupted in Greece. A senior officer of the Greek Air Force was arrested Thursday morning inside the unit where he served, on suspicion of possessing and distributing classified information, including NATO plans of strategic importance.
According to military authorities, the 50-year-old is suspected of acting on behalf of a third country and was detained shortly before delivering a large amount of secret materials to China. The case is considered highly sensitive, due to the nature of the information and the role the officer held in military structures.
The arrested man served in the 128th Telecommunications and Electronics Training Squadron of the Air Force, in the Kavuri area, a unit that deals with critical systems and communications. For this reason, he had direct access to confidential data.
He has been charged with the serious charge of “collecting and transmitting secret information of military importance to third parties.” Media sources report that the officer had been placed under close surveillance by the Greek National Intelligence Service (EYP), in cooperation with specialized military counterintelligence structures, for at least a month.
During the investigation, authorities determined that the suspect used the encrypted communication app Signal, regularly deleting messages to avoid tracking and detecting his activity.
According to the same sources, the evidence against the officer is considered very serious and he has been accompanied to give evidence. The arrest was carried out after a special operation, with the participation of a prosecutor, EYP agents and officers specialized in counterintelligence.
In an official announcement, the General Staff of the National Defense of Greece confirmed the arrest, emphasizing that these are criminal offenses provided for by the Military Criminal Code, related to the collection and transmission of secret military information, with a direct risk to national interests.
