Key figures in the French National Rally (Rassemblement National) are using the relationship between Friedrich Merz and Giorgia Meloni as proof that they too can cooperate with Berlin. Jordan Bardella aims to break down the political wall that Germany has erected against the far right.
As he prepares for a possible presidential run in 2027, the 30-year-old leader of the French far-right is trying to soften his party's traditionally hostile stance toward Germany and present himself as a figure with whom the German political establishment can cooperate in the future.
Bardella discreetly held a meeting with the German ambassador to France earlier this year, while two senior National Rally officials who spoke on condition of anonymity due to internal party discussions said he could visit Germany in the coming months.
Bardella "considers Germany an indispensable partner of France, therefore dialogue is necessary," declared Thibaut François, secretary of the National Rally in the European Parliament and responsible for European affairs, confirming the party's rapprochement with Berlin.
According to him, there is "a very clear will to have relations with countries that have weight, that are at the top in terms of population or economic power and that influence the direction of the European Union."
For Bardella, the rapprochement with Germany is an opportunity to boost his international profile and show voters that he can manage relations with France's European partners. Critics of the far-right leader point to his young age and lack of executive experience as reasons why he is not suited for the French presidency.
His party also knows it must appease conservative voters on the economy, who do not share the same defiant stance towards the European Union and other European centers of power.
However, building relations with Berlin requires Bardella to overcome the German political taboo against cooperating with the far right. Since the end of World War II, Germany's main parties have agreed not to cooperate with forces like the Alternative for Germany (AfD), whether in government or in passing laws.
On the international stage, Berlin has shown more flexibility, cooperating for practical reasons with nationalist leaders such as former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Ndërtimi i urave politike
As head of his party's delegation to the European Parliament, Bardella has not hesitated to criticize the EU as being too favorable to Berlin. Last month, he promised to defend French interests in Brussels "to restore the comparative advantages that other European countries are already enjoying."
However, National Rally officials believe they can build bridges with the German government, citing the willingness of Merz's Christian Democrats to pass policies in the European Parliament with the support of the National Rally and other right-wing parties.
In the European Parliament, the Christian Democrats are part of the European People's Party (EPP), the dominant center-right force, while the National Rally is part of the "Patriots" group, a coalition of nationalist parties that considers itself "the main opposition in the European Union."
An official close to Bardella cited cooperation between the two sides in efforts to cut EU bureaucracy and soften "punitive" green rules, even though they continue to disagree on other topics, such as energy policy.
Bardella told FAZ that he is willing to cooperate with Merz on issues ranging from environmental and business regulations to migration.
"Beyond our differences, Franco-German relations constitute the foundation of Europe. They are essential for ensuring the independence and strategic autonomy of European nations," he said.
Another element that, according to National Rally officials, could make the party more acceptable to the German Christian Democrats is the sensational split with the Alternative for Germany (AfD).
"We can talk to everyone," Leggeri declared, describing the party's role as a "bridge" between different right-wing groups in a fragmented European Parliament.
In addition to reaching out to Germany, Bardella is also building a relationship with British populist Nigel Farage, whom he congratulated on his electoral success last week. The two met in London last December, during one of Bardella's most important international visits to date.
He also visited Israel last year, in a symbolic moment for a political movement that has historically been associated with accusations of anti-Semitism. Both Bardella and Marine Le Pen have also held meetings with the US ambassador to Paris, Charles Kushner./ Adapted from "Pamphlet", from "Politico"
