Nuclear weapons treaty expires, Russia warns US: There will be no new agreement

We have entered a world without nuclear arms control. The last remaining treaty limiting the arsenals of Russia and the US expired yesterday.

This means that, for the first time in more than half a century, there will be no legal restrictions on missiles and their nuclear warheads, and there are fears that we are on the verge of a new arms race.

Amid concerns about the termination of this agreement, it was reported that the US and Russia were discussing the possibility of renewing the agreement for 6 months, until a new agreement was reached between the parties.

Former Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev called on the US to be "honest" about a nuclear weapons deal, after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington would not sign a deal "for the sake of a deal" and that it "no longer serves its purpose".

Later in a post, Medvedev said the US State Department called New START "flawed" because it does not cover tactical nuclear weapons or China. He warned the US that there will be no new treaty on Washington's terms.

"Really? What about the UK and France? Hypersonic weapons? Washington's statement means one thing: there will never be a treaty under these terms ," he added.
