Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken said drones have been seen flying over a Belgian military base near the Dutch border over the past three nights. He added that drones were also seen several times over the Kleine-Brogel military base, which houses US military nuclear weapons.
While Russia is widely suspected of being behind other similar incidents in Europe, the minister declined to speculate on who was responsible.
"The investigation is ongoing ," he said.
He said the flights followed a similar pattern, with small drones initially sent to test radio frequencies before larger drones were seen "for surveillance and destabilization."
Francken said those responsible for the drones were trying to create panic in Belgium. He added that this was not the work of amateurs, he said that the drone flights looked like an espionage operation.
"From whom, I don't know. I have some ideas, but I'll be careful ," he stressed.
This follows a series of drone incidents over European airports in recent months. Munich Airport in Germany was forced to suspend operations twice within 24 hours last month after several unconfirmed sightings.
And a number of drones were also seen over civilian airports and Danish and Norwegian military installations in September.
