"The importance of nuclear weapons is growing," Finnish leader: A new

Finland's President Alexander Stubb said "a new era of nuclear weapons" has begun, after the United States announced last week that it plans to conduct new nuclear weapons tests.

Stubb said that the “logic of containment” and “strategic stability among superpowers” is undergoing a transformation.

"We have entered a new era of nuclear weapons, which, unfortunately, the importance of nuclear weapons is increasing," Stubb said during a speech in Helsinki on November 3.

Last week, US President Donald Trump announced that the US would begin testing nuclear weapons - for the first time since 1992.

The announcement came after Russia said it had tested a new nuclear-powered cruise missile, the Burevestnik, as well as a nuclear-capable underwater drone.

No other country, except North Korea, is known to have carried out a nuclear explosion for decades.

Russia and China have not conducted such tests since 1990 and 1996, respectively.

On Sunday, Trump claimed that countries like Russia and China have conducted underground nuclear tests, unknown to the public, and the US will do the same.

"How can we build together the policy of containment? How can we control escalation," Stubb asked, emphasizing that these are questions that a small country like Finland, which shares a 1,340-kilometer border with Russia, must now consider together with its allies.

Breaking with decades of military non-commitment, the Nordic country joined NATO in 2023, following the launch of the Russian invasion of Ukraine./ REL
