Drones flew near a military base in Belgium, and the Defense Minister spoke openly about possible espionage.

Minister Theo Franken stated today (November 3) that the incident occurred over the weekend and was suspected of espionage activity.

Specifically, as he stated on public television RTBF, the drones were seen on Saturday night and Sunday at the Kleine Brogel base, in the northeastern province of Limburg. It houses American weapons, such as F-16 jets and is expected to be deployed, as well as F-35 jets.

Franken avoided attributing the recent violations of Belgian airspace to the Russians, but suggested there were no other obvious suspects.

"The Russians are trying to do this in all European countries. Are they the Russians now? I can't say, but the motives are clear and the ways in which this is done are also very clear ," he told RTBF.

The weekend incident is the latest in a series of such incidents that have recently occurred in Belgium and elsewhere in Europe.

In recent weeks, Russian drones have been intercepted and shot down over Poland. Another Russian drone was seen over Romania, while drones of unknown origin, strongly suspected of being Russian, have disrupted air traffic at airports in Denmark, Norway and Germany.

"The war is really a drone war and the Department of Defense needs to prepare for that," Franken added.

Belgium's defense minister is expected to present a 50 million euro plan next week to develop a national anti-drone system.

He told Radio 1 that the package would fund detection systems, jamming equipment and anti-drone weapons to protect critical installations.

The Belgian minister ruled out a hoax, noting that "our radio frequency jammer did not work because the drone operators tested our frequency and changed it. They use their own frequencies - something an amateur could not do."
