Donald Trump's attack on American institutions is a global warning. Democracy does not collapse in Moscow or Beijing, but in the silence of allies who are afraid to defend it...
In a strong editorial published today in the newspaper Vijesti, it is stated that "Donald Trump's attack on American democracy can no longer be ignored."
According to the article, what is happening in the United States is no longer an internal American issue, but a rift that risks spreading to Europe itself, striking at the foundations of the liberal international order.
The article begins with a harsh metaphor: "What do you do when your best friend abuses his partner at home?" - a question the author addresses to European leaders, who, according to him, are behaving like frightened spectators in the face of the degradation of institutions in Washington.
Instead of reacting, EU leaders have chosen silence and humility, hoping that Trump will continue to support Europe against Russia and not openly align himself with Vladimir Putin. But the cost of this silence is daunting: accepting unfair trade terms, increasing military spending, and tolerating rhetoric that undermines liberal values.
According to the article, no one in Europe has openly challenged Trump’s myth of “ending eight wars in eight months,” nor has he denounced the destruction he has wrought on the multilateral order and organizations like the United Nations. Silence has become a strategy, and strategies of silence have historically come at heavy costs for the continent.
In its analysis, the newspaper warns that the wave of authoritarianism blowing from Washington is also finding echoes in Europe, in countries like Viktor Orbán's Hungary, or Aleksandar Vučić's Serbia, where democracy is becoming an electoral decoration.
What happens in America doesn't stay in America. It's tomorrow's news for Europe. And when the US, the global model of the separation of powers, uses the military to intimidate civilian protesters, then it is pointless for the continent to talk about European values without reflecting on the approaching danger.
If Europe remains silent about the abuses of power in Washington, it will become complicit in the destruction of global democracy. Defending the democratic order does not begin in Brussels, but with the courage to speak the truth to its most powerful ally. It is time for Europe to speak up.
This editorial is more than a critique of Donald Trump, it is a call for reflection for all democracies that claim to be part of the Western world. For Albania, the message is clear: democracy is not defended with speeches, but with institutions that do not surrender to momentary interests. As Tirana struggles to secure international support for EU integration, this article is a reminder that any government that tolerates the concentration of power, control of the media or the weakening of the judiciary is walking down a path where democracy begins to slowly fade.
Illiberalism is a virus that spreads silently; by leaders who use fear to gain control, and by societies that think “it doesn’t affect us.” For Albania, this is a direct warning: Edi Rama’s unprecedented authoritarianism will lead us to the abyss./ Pamphlet
