Orban 'corrupts' Trump, economic agreement with the US
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Trump

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said today that he will meet soon with US President Donald Trump to discuss an economic agreement between the two countries, Reuters reports.

"There is a date and the negotiation agenda is about 80% (ready). When we can agree with the Americans on the remaining 20%, we will decide together with the Americans when to announce the meeting and then it will happen," Orban, an early Trump ally, said in an interview with the news website Mandiner.

Orban said Budapest would like to see a tax agreement on the agenda to prevent double taxation. He also said he would like to talk to the American leader about investment.

The US terminated its tax agreement with Hungary in 2022, and the decision took effect in January 2023.

Orban has predicted a "golden age" of US-Hungarian relations under Trump, despite tariffs imposed on the European Union that have damaged Hungary's economy.

Although Orban has not held a bilateral meeting with Trump since he took office in January, he has repeatedly expressed interest in an economic deal.

The Hungarian leader, who faces re-election in 2026, has cultivated a strong personal relationship with Trump over the years. His tough stance on immigration has won him support in Trump-affiliated circles in the US.

However, relations between the two countries have faced tensions, particularly due to Orbán's pro-China policies and continued dependence on oil and natural gas imports from Russia.

A tangible sign of improving relations under the Trump administration came last month, when the US fully restored Hungary's status in its visa-free regime program.
