Ukrainian officials are displaying a renewed confidence, and it's all thanks to US President Donald Trump.
Despite Russia's heavy air strikes targeting the country's energy system, the belief that the end may be near is slowly spreading in Kiev. The hopes in the capital are that by spring or summer, Russian President Vladimir Putin will take negotiations seriously, with talks of an end to the war sometime next year.
In a closed-door parliamentary session with lawmakers from his Servant of the People party, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky risked that Russia’s current offensive in the east of the country could be its last major ground offensive in the conflict, according to those present. Of course, the country will have to endure another harsh winter, but Zelensky told them he expects there to be a real possibility of a ceasefire, although, he noted, it will not be easy.
For this to happen, Russia must face more economic and military pressure, so that Putin understands that the only logical outcome is negotiation and that prolonging the conflict will bring no other advantage to him and will only bleed Russia. Fortunately, having just successfully brokered a ceasefire in Gaza, Trump seems determined to stop the war in Ukraine and add another challenge to his Nobel Peace Prize nomination.
That's what a high-level Ukrainian delegation, including Zelensky's powerful Chief of Staff, Andriy Yermak, and Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, have been discussing with American counterparts in Washington this week: how to force Putin to stop his war and how to help Ukraine withstand Russia's air strikes this winter.
And with Zelensky, who will be at the White House on Friday for another face-to-face meeting with Trump, this time, they sense that the situation may be turning in their favor.
In his hour-long speech to the Knesset on Monday, the US President made clear his intention to focus efforts on ending the war between Ukraine and Russia: "It would be great if we could make a peace deal with [Iran]... First, we have to make Russia go away." For the man who once blamed Zelensky for the conflict, it seems this is now Putin's war. Last month, Trump called Russia "aggressive."

But the insider also credits Zelensky for his hard work in his relationship with Trump and for the care he has shown with his language. “You have to understand that from the beginning of the war, Zelensky and Yermak were used to being treated like rock stars, like global celebrities, and then Trump comes in and says, ‘There’s only room for one diva here, me.’ That’s why we blew up the Oval Office,” he said.
There have been other factors that have shaped Trump's shift, and according to another Republican foreign policy adviser, who asked to remain anonymous to freely discuss sensitive issues, these include China's hosting of Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un last month. "Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un as you plot against the United States of America," Trump posted sharply on his Truth Social platform.
"The best way to get revenge on Putin is to praise Zelensky, that's how Trump sees it," the adviser said. And going even further, to increase US support for Ukraine.
To that end, Washington has recently increased intelligence sharing with Ukrainian forces to help launch long-range strikes on energy targets deep inside Russia, making the consequences of war known to ordinary citizens. Meanwhile, discussions about supplying Ukraine with Tomahawk Cruise missiles are intended to intimidate the Kremlin, although the risk of escalation is likely to discourage Trump from going that far.
Overall, the cards are starting to move in Zelensky’s hands. Ukrainian officials and their supporters in the U.S. hope they will continue to do so, though they acknowledge that with Trump, nothing can be taken for granted. How will he respond if Putin remains stubborn, as signs indicate he will?
Yet, despite his unpredictability, they are happier with this Trump than the one from February. / Adapted from Politico /
