Renowned British military analyst Michael Clarke expressed strong doubts that Vladimir Putin would decide to use nuclear weapons in the war against Ukraine, estimating that the political, diplomatic and strategic costs for Russia would be devastating.
Clarke said Putin is unlikely to risk being labeled the greatest war criminal of the 21st century.
" I'm not sure if that's a reputation he would want. Even then, I think the world would turn decisively against him and against Russia; even the Chinese would ban him for that," Clarke said.
According to him, the United States and Donald Trump are particularly concerned about this issue. Clarke said that Trump thinks Putin is much closer to using a nuclear weapon than most people believe, and this is one of the main reasons why he is treating the Russian issue with great caution.
However, Clarke himself does not share this level of alarm. He expressed "high skepticism" that Russia would use nuclear weapons, as such an action would not bring about any decisive military change on the battlefield.
"He thinks Putin is much closer to using a nuclear weapon than most other people think and that's why he's quite nervous about it. It's one of the reasons why he's afraid of him. Unless it's just used as terror... to drop it on Poltava or Kharkiv... to kill as many civilians as possible ," he said.
Clarke stressed that so far he has not seen any concrete signs from Russia, despite the difficult situation on the front, that could suggest a real preparation for a nuclear escalation.
