Spain has recorded its highest number of deaths caused by high temperatures for the month of May since 2015.
According to the Ministry of Health, at least 101 people lost their lives last month as a result of the heat wave, a figure that constitutes a record for this period.
"This number is 3.6 times higher than the average number of heat-related deaths recorded during the month of May in the last decade," the ministry said.
Meanwhile, record temperatures for May have been recorded in several Spanish cities in recent days, especially in the northern part of the country. The National Meteorological Agency (Aemet) described the temperatures as "exceptionally high for May" and noted that this heat wave has continued for several days in a row.
According to meteorologists, the persistence and intensity of high temperatures have significantly influenced the increase in fatal cases related to extreme weather.
Spanish Health Minister Mónica García said the risk is not only related to rising temperatures, but also to the fact that heat waves are appearing earlier than usual.
"The problem is no longer just that it's hotter, but that the heat is coming earlier and earlier and our bodies are not yet adapted," she said during the presentation of the 2026 National Plan for Preventing the Health Effects of Extreme Temperatures.
According to the Ministry of Health, the risk of mortality increases from 9.1% to 10.7% for every degree that the temperature exceeds the limit considered dangerous to health.
Long-term data also shows the severe impact of heat in Spain. From 2015 to 2025, the MoMo system estimates that 27,564 people have lost their lives as a result of high temperatures. The deadliest year remains 2022 with 4,789 fatalities, while 2025 ranks second with 3,832 deaths.
