Luigi Cavallari jumped into the water to cool off, but never surfaced. The search operation has been ongoing for hours in Lake Vico.
Moments of anxiety in Italy, where Luigi Cavallari, husband of the Minister for Family, Birth and Equal Opportunities, Eugenia Roccella, is reported missing in Lake Vico, in the province of Viterbo.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, around 5:30 p.m. According to preliminary information, Cavallari was in a small boat with his wife when he jumped into the water to cool off. He surfaced briefly and reportedly complained that he was not feeling well, but then disappeared from sight.
The boat, which was not anchored, had drifted away from the site and the people on board were unable to help in time. It was Minister Roccella herself who raised the alarm, after she did not see her husband surface.
Search and rescue operations were immediately activated. Firefighters and carabinieri divers, 118 ambulances and a helicopter are in the area, while the search is focusing on the place where Cavallari was last seen.
Local authorities have also arrived at the scene to coordinate the operation, while the minister has been escorted to her family's apartment in the Viterbo area.
The Carabinieri are collecting evidence to reconstruct the dynamics of the event. Lake Vico is a very popular area during weekends and there have been cases of drowning in the past.
Luigi Cavallari is a university professor in the field of architecture and civil engineering. He and Eugenia Roccella have been married since 1976 and have two children. Just a few months ago, the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Meanwhile, Italian political leaders have expressed solidarity with the minister and her family, hoping that search operations will bring a positive result.
