The new escalation comes just days after the agreement between the US and Iran and the Washington-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.
The Middle East is facing a new wave of tensions, calling into question two important agreements reached in recent days: the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, and the Washington-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.
Iran announced on Saturday that it had struck US military targets in the region in retaliation for US attacks near the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media said the Revolutionary Guards carried out the attacks, while the Foreign Ministry accused Washington of violating a deal signed last week.
The US military has not confirmed that its bases were hit. A US official told CNN that the US detected several Iranian drones, but they did not reach their targets.
Meanwhile, Bahrain, which hosts a major US military base, reported drone strikes on its territory. Bahrain's Foreign Ministry condemned them as a "flagrant violation of sovereignty," while Tehran has yet to respond to the accusations.
In parallel, the Israeli army carried out a drone attack in southern Lebanon, just a day after agreeing to withdraw some troops from the area, as part of the US-brokered agreement.
According to an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) official, the attack was aimed at eliminating a threat to Israeli troops. The attack underscores the fragility of the ceasefire, as fighting between Israel and Hezbollah continues to escalate along Lebanon's southern border.
The Washington-brokered deal calls for a gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops from areas north and south of the Litani River and the transfer of control to the Lebanese army. However, Hezbollah has rejected the deal. The group's secretary-general, Sheikh Naim Qassem, called it "an abuse of Lebanon's sovereignty."
Recent developments show that, despite diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions, the situation in the Middle East remains extremely fragile and the risk of a new escalation continues to be high.
