An important development marked the 28th national protest taking place on Saturday afternoon in front of the Prime Minister's Office building in Tirana, where Italian MEP Ilaria Salis joined.
In her speech to the protesters, Salis described the rally as an example of citizenship and democracy, stating that "the best Europe is not seen in Brussels, but here in Tirana," where, according to her, citizens are defending the right to decide on their future.
" It is a great honor for me to be here with you today. On these streets, in the heart of the Flamingo Revolution, we see the best of Europe. Here, people are defending with their voice and presence their intelligence, their needs, their dreams and their fundamental right to decide for themselves their future ," she said.
The MEP also focused on the projects affecting the island of Sazan and the Narta lagoon, emphasizing that they should remain protected assets and not be transformed into luxury destinations for a few people.
" Albania, its land, its beauty and its cultural heritage are not commodities to be sold. Sazan Island and the Narta Lagoon must remain protected areas for everyone and for generations to come. They must not be turned into an amusement park for the rich ," Salis said.
At the end of her speech, Salis said that the protesters' cause is not only important for Albania, but also for Europe, calling for the continuation of civic resistance.
" What you are doing today is very important. You are writing history and showing a path that can be followed by other peoples. Albania is not for sale. Europe is not for sale. The world is not for sale. The rights of people and nature must always come before money and the interests of the powerful ," said the MEP.
Today the protest has entered its 28th day. But even though the protesters have faced attacks and pressure for 4 weeks, the number of participants still remains very high. Their demand is clear: Rama's departure and a change in the political caste in the country.
