US President Donald Trump has given a speech at the G7 summit in France. He began the press conference by thanking President Emmanuel Macron for his hospitality in France, saying it had been "one of the most successful summits" of the G7.
He added that the summit comes after the signing of a peace agreement that ends the current war in the Middle East, opens the Strait of Hormuz and prevents Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Trump stressed that Iran now has a new group of leaders who are "smarter" and "much less radicalized," saying he has achieved regime change.
"If you talk about regime change, nobody would say that, but I think it is. One group of leaders is completely gone, the second group of leaders is completely gone. The third group of their leaders is a little bit gone... I think that's regime change ," Trump said.
The US president spoke about the history of US relations with Iran, referring to the 2020 strike that killed top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani. He also criticized the Obama administration's nuclear deal. Trump also spoke about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with whom he has expressed frustration in recent days. He did not leave out the sting of Netanyahu and his policy towards Hezbollah.
"Netanyahu needs a little softer touch. You don't have to knock down a building every time someone walks in there who's from Hezbollah," Trump said.
The president further said that regarding the peace agreement with Iran, it will be signed soon.
"Tomorrow, maybe the day after. It is important to note that Iran has agreed that it will neither produce nor acquire nuclear weapons ," he said at his G7 press conference.
He stressed that a copy of the agreement was sent to Israel, a "good partner."
" I think they could do better with regard to Hezbollah ," Trump added.
The president went on to denounce US media reports that Iran could be given access to a $300 billion reconstruction fund as part of a deal to end the war. He called these reports fake news.
"We don't give them money. We don't give them any of this ," Trump added.
Trump also spoke about upcoming negotiations, which he said would include Gulf countries and discuss "non-nuclear issues," including Iran's "conventional ballistic missiles."
"They should have some because other people have some, you should have some ," Trump said.
Speaking about the memorandum of understanding with Iran, Trump said he hopes the agreement will also be the beginning of an agreement across the Middle East.
"Peace in Lebanon is something we're going to have to work on, but the big issue is the Iran deal," Trump said./ Pamphlet
