The Russian president was seen chatting with passersby during a visit to Kazan, his first such appearance in months. The visit comes at a time when public support for the Kremlin is reportedly declining.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has appeared among citizens in Kazan, in what is considered his first direct contact with the public in months.
During the visit, Putin approached a group of people and exchanged a few jokes. "Where are you from? I'm from Moscow too," he can be heard saying in a video circulating on social media.
In recent months, the Russian leader has rarely been seen in spontaneous contact with ordinary citizens, while his public appearances have mainly taken place before selected audiences and at events organized with high security measures.
According to reports published by the opposition media outlet NEXTA, Putin's positive ratings have been gradually declining in recent months. In this context, some analysts see his appearance in Kazan as an attempt to create a more public image.
The visit to Kazan is also Putin's first trip to a Russian region in the last seven months.
