Five days after the devastating earthquake that struck Venezuela, international search and rescue teams have managed to pull a 12-year-old boy alive who had been trapped under the rubble.

The rescue operation was carried out in the Macuto neighborhood, in the coastal city of La Guaira, by the USAR Ecuy-01 team in collaboration with the Dominican Republic team. The news was made public by the Fire Service of the Metropolitan District of Quito through an announcement on the X platform.

"After hours of work in Venezuela, our Usar Ecuy-01 team, in collaboration with the Dominican Republic team, managed to rescue Carlos, a 12-year-old boy who had been trapped under rubble in the Macuto neighborhood of La Guaira for five days after the earthquake," the rescue team said in a statement.

Meanwhile, authorities continue search and rescue operations in the areas most affected by the two seismic tremors with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, which caused extensive damage, especially in La Guaira.

At the time of the earthquake, more than 100 Venezuelan citizens recently repatriated from the United States were staying at a hotel in La Guaira. The deportation flight from Miami had arrived just hours earlier with 146 people on board, including 19 women and seven children.

Some of the survivors have recounted chaotic scenes from the moments of the earthquake, showing that many people were trapped under the rubble of buildings.

According to the preliminary balance of Venezuelan authorities, the number of victims has exceeded 1,700, while thousands of other people have been injured or displaced from their homes.
