The United States National Weather Service (NWS) has warned of a prolonged and dangerous heat wave, which is expected to affect the central and eastern parts of the country throughout the week.
According to the Weather Prediction Center, a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere will bring temperatures ranging from 32 to 38 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, high humidity will make the heat feel even more intense, with perceived temperatures expected to reach 43 to 46 degrees Celsius in the Southern Plains and Mid-Atlantic region.
Authorities have warned that the heat risk will be at "high to extreme" levels on Tuesday, noting that the lack of coolness during the night hours will further aggravate the situation. Minimum temperatures are expected to remain between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius, which increases the risk of health problems for the most vulnerable groups, according to the NWS.
The danger continues even during the 4th of July holiday
Forecasts indicate that extreme conditions will continue during the July 4th celebrations.
The NWS warns that a widespread heat risk, ranging from high to extreme, will cover the Lower Great Lakes region, the Mississippi and Ohio river valleys, and the Mid-Atlantic region. The agency has urged citizens to limit outdoor activities and use cooling centers, warning that high temperatures cause significant stress on the body.
According to data released by AccuWeather, temperatures have reached 34 degrees Celsius in Houston and Phoenix, 33 degrees in Dallas and 35 degrees in Jacksonville. Meanwhile, in Washington, 30 degrees Celsius were recorded, while in New York City 29 degrees Celsius.
