Celebrations for Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador, which secured qualification for the round of 16 of the World Cup, turned into tragedy in the Mexican capital.
According to authorities, three people died of asphyxiation during a mass gathering of fans near the "Angel of Independence" monument in Mexico City.
" A 19-year-old woman, a 44-year-old man, and a 48-year-old man died of asphyxiation in the crowd ," the city's health commissioner said.
According to city government estimates, over a million people took to the streets of Mexico City to celebrate the national team's success, with the largest concentration of fans near the symbolic "Angel of Independence" monument.
Thanks to the victory over Ecuador, Mexico secured a place in the round of 16 of the World Cup, where they will face the winner of the England-Congo match.
