Four people have been arrested in the provinces of Naples and Avellino as part of the investigation into the explosive attack on Italian investigative journalist Sigfrido Ranucci, host of the Report show on Rai 3. The news was announced by Italian authorities and reported by local media.

By order of the Court of Rome, three suspects have been placed in custody, while another is under house arrest. They are accused, in various forms of responsibility, of possession, transport and use of an explosive device, threats and damage to property, with aggravating circumstances due to group action and methods similar to those of mafia organizations.

The investigation began after the October 16, 2025, attack in Torvaianica, near Pomezia, when an explosive device exploded in front of Ranucci's apartment. As a result, the journalist's two vehicles were destroyed and the surrounding wall of the house was damaged.

According to investigators, the unraveling of the incident was made possible through the analysis of security cameras, technical-scientific expertise, and the review of telephone records, which allowed for the complete reconstruction of the preparatory and executive phases of the assassination.

The prosecution suspects that the group acted on the orders of third parties, who have not yet been identified. According to preliminary investigations, the assassination was carried out as a "favor" in exchange for a financial reward. The suspected perpetrators, according to the prosecution, received logistical support, dedicated phone cards, legal assistance and a possible escape outside of Italy was also planned.

Investigators also allege that the suspects attempted to obstruct investigations by requesting wiretapping devices, destroying SIM cards, and coordinating joint defense versions to conceal their involvement and the identities of the orderers.

Expertise by the Carabinieri and the Institute of Criminalistics (RIS) showed that the explosive device contained explosive gelatin used in quarries, an old material but with high destructive power, which according to investigators indicates the existence of an illegal explosives supply network.

A camera on the SS148 Pontina motorway identified a Fiat 500X rented in the Campania region. Analysis of the vehicle's movement and phone signals showed that the route followed by the suspected perpetrators' phones matched the car's route, both on the night of the attack and during a preliminary surveillance of the area.

Journalist Sigfrido Ranucci told Rai 3 that he now awaits further developments in the investigation to understand if there are "other levels of responsibility." He thanked the Carabinieri and prosecutors for their investigative work, emphasizing that the entire chain of organization of the attack must be unraveled.

The Vice President of the Council of Ministers, Alfredo Mantovano, also welcomed the arrests and expressed hope that the investigations will lead to the perpetrators of the assassination. According to him, any attack on journalists and freedom of information must be fully clarified, leaving no doubt.

Rai's Director General, Giampaolo Rossi, and the Board of Directors of the Italian public television considered the arrest of the suspects an important step towards uncovering the truth and reaffirmed their support for investigative journalism.

Among those arrested are Antonio Passariello, Marika De Filippi, Saverio Mutone and Pellegrino D'Avino, all with criminal records. The prosecution had initially requested the charge of massacre, but the judge did not accept this legal qualification.

The investigative file also includes a wiretap, where one of the suspects is heard saying: "I planted the bomb. We are making history." In another conversation he claims to have acted on orders from other people, an element that remains the subject of ongoing investigations. /Adapted from RAI /
