Moments of tension were recorded at Eleftherios Venizelos Airport in Athens, after a Lufthansa plane was forced to make an emergency landing due to a technical problem during the flight.
The Airbus A321, flying from Athens to Munich with 177 passengers and 7 crew members on board, returned to the airport just minutes after takeoff. The pilots announced that an immediate return was necessary for safety reasons, after a defect was detected during the flight.
The landing was uneventful, but emergency procedures were activated immediately after the plane came to a stop. The crew opened the doors and used inflatable slides to quickly evacuate passengers, while moments of confusion and panic arose on board.
Firefighters and airport security forces were deployed on the runway, while emergency teams directed passengers to safe areas. Greek authorities reported that all passengers and crew are out of danger, while two minor injuries were recorded during the evacuation.
The problems for the passengers did not end with the return to Athens. During the new departure to Munich, an elderly passenger lost consciousness on board and received first aid from a doctor on board. Then, during the landing in Munich, the plane canceled contact with the runway at the last moment and only managed to land after a second attempt. According to reports, Munich airport has also made psychologists available for the passengers involved in the incident.
