Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has reacted after the signing of the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States, announcing that in principle he did not support reaching an agreement with the American administration.
In a statement to the Iranian people, Khamenei said that Iranian authorities had made numerous efforts to reach this stage, while accusing US President Donald Trump of using "all kinds of leverage" to secure the agreement.
"In principle, I had a different opinion," Khamenei said, adding that the decision to allow the signing came after the Iranian president, in his capacity as chairman of the Supreme National Security Council, assumed responsibility for protecting the rights of Iran and the so-called Resistance Front.
According to him, the Iranian president guaranteed that if the American side exceeded the agreed limits, he would not be held responsible for its actions. For this reason, Khamenei said he had authorized the continuation of the process.
In his statement, the Supreme Leader also emphasized that future direct negotiations with the United States should not be interpreted as an acceptance of American positions.
"The face-to-face negotiations that will take place in the future will not mean accepting the enemy's point of view," he declared.
In conclusion, Khamenei expressed hope that the agreement and future diplomatic processes will bring benefits to the Iranian nation, calling for unity and vigilance in protecting national interests.
