Strong message from Tehran: The fate of the Strait of Hormuz is in our hands

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned that any attempt to challenge Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz will lead to an escalation of tensions in the region.

During an official visit to Baghdad, Araghchi held a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart, where the focus of the talks was on recent developments in the Middle East and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important oil transportation routes in the world.

According to Reuters, the Iranian minister stressed that "restoring maritime traffic to pre-war levels in Hormuz depends solely on Tehran," adding that "any challenge to Iranian surveillance of the strait will increase tensions."

On the other hand, the Iraqi Foreign Minister stated that during the meeting he had underlined the importance of keeping the sea passage open and had asked Iran to lift the naval blockade. Gulf states have also publicly expressed the position that the Strait of Hormuz should remain open to international navigation.

Araghchi also touched on the situation in Lebanon, following the Israeli army's announcements of the killing of Hezbollah militants in the Nabatieh area, in the south of the country.

In his statement, he reiterated Tehran's position that the memorandum of understanding reached with the United States provides for Israel to withdraw from Lebanon and end military operations on Lebanese territory.
