The new escalation of tensions comes at a time when Washington and Tehran were negotiating a memorandum of understanding to end an unpopular war.

The US military has launched further strikes on several targets in Iran, a day after striking Iranian territory in response to a drone attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that the attacks were a "direct response to ongoing Iranian aggression against commercial maritime shipping." According to it, the targets included military surveillance infrastructure, communications systems, air defense positions, drone depots and naval mine-laying capabilities.

In response, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced in the early hours of Sunday that it had launched a joint missile and drone operation against eight US military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain.

In a statement, the IRGC warned that any further act of aggression would be met with a "devastating response" and stressed that violating the ceasefire would lead to "the complete cessation of all diplomatic processes."

Both Bahrain and Kuwait condemned the Iranian attacks, although it was not yet clear whether any targets had been hit.

The new escalation of tensions comes as Washington and Tehran were negotiating a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to end an unpopular war, which has caused a sharp rise in global oil prices and resulted in thousands of civilian casualties.

The exchange of attacks highlighted the fragility of the Pakistan-brokered peace process, with both sides accusing each other of violating an interim agreement signed less than two weeks ago.

The text of the agreement signed between the US and Iran stipulated that the two countries, as well as their respective allies, " shall not initiate war or military operations against each other and shall refrain from the threat or use of force against each other."

In a post on the Truth Social platform on Saturday, US President Donald Trump warned that the situation could reach a critical point.

"There may come a time when we will no longer be able to show restraint and will be forced to militarily finish the job we have begun so successfully. If that happens, the Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer exist," Trump wrote.

Earlier, the US military announced that it had carried out new attacks on Iran, just hours after a tanker was hit in the Strait of Hormuz, the world's most important energy shipping route, which Iran had largely blocked for most of the conflict.

The 14-point interim agreement between the US and Iran aimed to halt the fighting, which, according to the text, was launched by the US and Israel on February 28, as well as reopen the Strait of Hormuz to shipping, while talks on more complex issues, such as Iran's nuclear program, would begin.

A round of brokered talks, led by US Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, took place in Switzerland a week ago. Following these meetings, Washington lifted some sanctions on Tehran, but clashes and mutual accusations have returned and intensified.

A US official, confirming Iranian attacks on military facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain, told Reuters that the situation remains evolving, but so far there are no reports of American casualties or major damage to US military bases in the Middle East.

Earlier, US Central Command said its forces had carried out new strikes after a Panamanian-flagged tanker was attacked by an Iranian drone on Saturday.

"Iran was given the opportunity to respect the ceasefire agreement, but chose not to do so," the CENTCOM statement said, adding that the US strikes were "a direct response to Iran's continued aggression against commercial shipping." / Adapted from "The Guardian"
