Soccer star Lionel Messi is looking forward to the World Cup semi-final against England with special excitement. The Argentine star has admitted that this match has a special meaning for him, as it is the first time he will face the English national team in his career with the Argentina jersey.
"It's a special match because it's the first time I've played against a team like this. I've played against everyone except England. It's special because they're a great team, a real power and it's always good to play against teams like this," Messi said.
The Argentina captain added that at this stage of the tournament the most important thing is physical recovery, as the load of matches has been great.
"Now I'm trying to rest, because we've trained a lot, we've been through a lot of fatigue and the team is feeling it. I'm trying to get in the best possible condition to do what we've done so far: compete," said the striker from Rosario.
England is the only major opponent that Messi has never faced with the Argentina national team, whether in official matches, friendly matches or at other levels of national representation.
For a player with such a long and successful career, this encounter has been one of the rare gaps in his international history.
The last match between Argentina and England was a friendly on November 12, 2005. Messi was part of the list of players assembled by coach José Pékerman and had also played in the World Cup qualifiers, but was unable to be on the field due to a suspension following the red card he received against Hungary.
