Six people were killed in a series of shootings in the US state of Iowa that, according to preliminary investigations, are related to a domestic dispute, local authorities announced.
According to Muscatine Police, the incident occurred Monday at two residences and a business in the city of Muscatine. The suspected perpetrator, identified as Ryan Willis McFarland, 52, of Muscatine, died after shooting himself during a police intervention.
Authorities believe the victims are members of his family. Police Chief Anthony Kies described the incident as an "act of evil."
Four of the victims were found dead in an apartment where the shooting was reported at around 12:12 p.m. local time. When police arrived at the scene, all four people were dead.
According to authorities, McFarland had left the house before police arrived. Officers later located him on a trail near the Mississippi River.
"While communicating with Ryan Willis McFarland, he shot himself," said Police Chief Anthony Kies. "Officers and emergency crews administered first aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene."

During the investigation, detectives received information about other possible victims. Authorities later found two more men dead from gunshot wounds, one in another residence and the other in a nearby business.
In a press release, Muscatine Police said preliminary findings indicate the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute. Authorities believe all of the victims are family members of the suspected shooter.
Police have not yet released the identities and ages of the victims. The police chief confirmed that McFarland had a criminal record, but did not provide further details.
Authorities stressed that there is no longer any active threat to the community, while investigations into the incident continue.
