Israel carried out an airstrike in Lebanon on the southern outskirts of Beirut, specifically in the Dahiyeh area, which is a Hezbollah stronghold. According to a joint statement by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, the target of the operation was a commander of the elite Radwan Force.
Israeli authorities have claimed that members of the Radwan Force are responsible for rocket attacks on Israeli communities, as well as for actions that have caused casualties among the Israel Defense Forces. As reported, the decision to strike was taken with the aim of neutralizing the specific commander, with Netanyahu stressing that no terrorist has immunity and that Israel will continue its actions to secure the residents of the north.
Meanwhile, the situation on the ground remains extremely tense. Despite a ceasefire agreed on April 16, 2026, fighting continues unabated in southern Lebanon. Israeli forces say they reserve the right to self-defense against imminent or sustained attacks, while the UN notes that this week has seen some of the most intense attacks since the official ceasefire began.
The attack on Beirut was reportedly carried out without warning and was accompanied by powerful explosions. It is the first time Israel has targeted the Lebanese capital since April 8, underscoring the escalation of the situation despite efforts for a diplomatic solution and negotiations being held under the auspices of the United States.
