President Donald Trump expressed optimism about reaching a deal with Iran, which could include Iran's export of highly enriched uranium to the United States, during a phone conversation with PBS News on Wednesday morning.
Trump said he thinks the US is getting close to a deal, "but that's what I've thought before with them, so we'll see what happens."
He said sending special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, his son-in-law, to the talks is "unlikely."
The president said there is a possibility that a deal could be reached before his trip to China next week.
Trump warned that if a deal is not reached, the situation could escalate. "If they agree, it's over. If they don't, there will be bombing," he said.
"I think there's a very good chance that this will end, and if it doesn't end, we're going to have to go back to bombing them hard," Trump told White House correspondent Liz Landers.
The call came hours after Trump posted on Truth Social that the mission to escort merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz would be "suspended" as the countries moved closer to an agreement.
Key points from the conversation:
Liz Landers: I just saw your social media posts about Iran. Are you feeling optimistic that the US is getting closer to a deal?
President Donald Trump: Yeah, I think so, but that's what I've thought about with them before, so we'll see what happens. I think we have a very good chance of making a deal again. If not, we'll go back to our old ways.
Liz Landers: Some reports say that part of the deal would be for Iran to export its enriched uranium, possibly to the United States. Is that part of the deal?
President Donald Trump: Not "maybe." He will go to the United States.
Liz Landers: And another point of the agreement is that Iran commits not to operate its underground facilities. Is that part of the agreement too?
President Donald Trump: Exactly.
Liz Landers: Okay.
President Donald Trump: They will operate in good faith for a long period of time.
Liz Landers: Are you saying you're getting closer to a deal?
President Donald Trump: In other words, we're getting there.
Liz Landers: Do you think you could send Mr. Witkoff and Mr. Kushner?
President Donald Trump: Not very likely. I think we can do it here, and maybe for the final meeting we can have a signing ceremony somewhere.
Liz Landers: It is also reported that the freeze on Iranian enrichment would be followed by an enrichment level of 3.67%. Is that part of the deal?
President Donald Trump: No, it's not part of the deal. And, by the way, this is very small.
Liz Landers: I asked you yesterday, Secretary Rubio, about your administration's financial pressure on Iran. Would you target Chinese banks because they buy Iranian oil?
President Donald Trump: If we make this deal, we will ease sanctions on Iran, so we won't have to worry about that.
Liz Landers: Is this something you could discuss with Xi Jinping?
President Donald Trump: No. If this thing ends, there won't be much to discuss. I think there's a very good chance it will end, and if it doesn't end, we'll have to go back to bombing them hard. Very simple.
Liz Landers: Do you think this can be completed before you leave for China next week?
President Donald Trump: It's possible. It would be ideal, although it's not necessary.
Trump also commented on oil prices and the project for the new White House ballroom, defending the project's costs and stating that a large portion is being funded by himself and private donors.
"It's a very small part of what we do. And I'm contributing a lot of money myself," he said. / Adapted from Pamphlet
