Iran's chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has made a strong call for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, as Iran and the United States prepare to sign a peace deal later this week.
Ghalibaf made the statement during a telephone conversation with the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri. He stressed that the residents of southern Lebanon should return to their homes as soon as possible. The message was also published on Telegram by Ghalibaf himself.
"The people of southern Lebanon must return to their homes ," he wrote, considering this as part of the full implementation of the upcoming agreement between Iran and the US.
The Israeli military has intensified ground operations in southern Lebanon in recent days. Israeli forces have advanced about 2.5 miles southeast of the city of Nabatieh, a strategic area. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has forced an estimated 1.2 million people to flee their homes.
Iran sees any continued Israeli presence on Lebanese territory as a violation of the new agreement with Washington, which is expected to include a ceasefire on all fronts, including Lebanon.
The expected deal between Tehran and Washington aims to end the wider regional conflict, open the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic and address other issues such as Iran's nuclear program. Iranian officials have insisted that the ceasefire in Lebanon is an integral part of the deal.
On the other hand, Israel has expressed strong reservations and emphasized that it will maintain the necessary presence for its security.
