" It went well with Trump ."
This is what Giorgia Meloni commented to her staff on the first day of the G7 summit in Evian, signaling the beginning of a calmer phase in relations with US President Donald Trump.
According to Italian media, the prime minister did not reveal details from the talks with Trump, but hinted that the political and personal clashes of recent months are being left behind by both sides.
Signs of rapprochement became more evident on the second day of the summit, when Meloni and Trump were seen chatting in a friendly atmosphere before a working lunch dedicated to Iran. As shown by the footage released by Palazzo Chigi, Meloni approached the American president, who was discussing with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Later, the president of the European Council, Antonio Costa, also joined the conversation.
" I've been abandoned... " Trump joked, while Meloni immediately replied: " We've always been friends ."
Meloni arrived at the summit resort on the shores of Lake Geneva, near the Franco-Swiss border, just ahead of the Japanese prime minister, with whom she had met earlier in Rome. She was greeted upon arrival by French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife. Macron later posted a video of their greeting on social media, accompanied by the song “Felicità” by Al Bano and Romina Power.
Before leaving for France, Italy joined a joint statement with France, Germany and Great Britain, in which the four countries assess that a peace agreement between Washington and Tehran constitutes an opportunity to restore regional stability and strengthen the global economy.
The Italian government, together with European partners, also committed to a protective and independent mission in the Strait of Hormuz, with the aim of guaranteeing the safety of commercial traffic and carrying out mine clearance operations.
