Iran increases control in Hormuz, a harsh message to opposing countries

Iran has stated that ships belonging to "hostile countries" continue to be prevented from passing through the Strait of Hormuz, amid ongoing negotiations between Tehran and Washington.

According to Iranian state broadcaster IRIB, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy confirmed that the ban remains in effect for ships from countries considered hostile to Iran. Tehran also stressed that it will continue to cooperate with countries that respect the “Iranian order” in this strategic maritime corridor.

The statement comes at a time when there are expectations that a possible agreement between the US and Iran could ease trade movement through the Strait of Hormuz. However, Iranian authorities appear intent on maintaining tighter control over the vital waterway than before the conflict.

IRIB reported that more ships are expected to pass through the strait in the coming hours, where about 20% of global oil supplies are usually transported. Meanwhile, the Revolutionary Guard claimed that 25 ships have passed through the sea corridor in the past 24 hours.

However, these figures have not been confirmed by international ship tracking services, as many vessels deactivate AIS systems while passing through the area, making it difficult to verify their movements.
